Description

Chrysanthemum aspermy virus (CAV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Cucumovirus. As a systemic disease, it impacts the vascular system of the host plant, severely affecting the morphology and reproductive capabilities of ornamental crops, primarily chrysanthemums.

The host range of CAV is quite extensive, including various ornamental species such as dahlias, zinnias, and petunias. In some cases, it can also infect vegetable crops like tomatoes and peppers. The virus is capable of systemic movement throughout the plant, reaching the apical meristems and ensuring its persistence in vegetative propagation materials.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as foliar mottling, mosaic patterns, and chlorotic spotting. The most significant damage is observed in the floral structures; the virus causes "aspermy," where flower heads become distorted, irregular in shape, and fail to produce viable seeds. In susceptible varieties, stunted growth and lack of vigor are common indicators of advanced viral load.

The virus is primarily transmitted by several aphid species in a non-persistent manner. This means aphids can acquire the virus after a brief feed on an infected plant and immediately transmit it to a healthy one. Furthermore, the disease is frequently spread by human activity, specifically through the use of infected cuttings and contaminated pruning tools.

Management strategies focus entirely on prevention and sanitation, as there are no curative chemical treatments for viral plant infections.
