Description
Camellia petal blight is a destructive fungal disease caused by the specific pathogen Ciborinia camelliae. This fungus exclusively targets camellia flowers, making it a major concern for horticulturalists and gardeners. Unlike many other plant pathogens, it does not attack foliage or woody tissues, focusing its destructive power entirely on the floral display.
The disease affects various species and cultivars within the Camellia genus, particularly Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua. Because the fungus infects only the petals, the main damage is the total loss of aesthetic appeal. In favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly, causing mass petal drop and effectively ending the flowering season prematurely.
Early symptoms appear as small, brownish spots on the petals that expand rapidly. As the infection progresses, these spots merge, causing the entire flower to turn dark brown or black and become limp. A key characteristic feature is the development of sclerotia—small, black, rock-hard fungal resting bodies—that form within the base of the infected, fallen flowers.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and mild temperatures during the bloom period. Ascospores are released from the soil-borne sclerotia and dispersed by wind.

Management strategies focus heavily on sanitation. While chemical fungicides may offer some protection, strict adherence to sanitation protocols remains the primary defense against this persistent pathogen.
