Description

Cilevirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the family Kitaviridae. It is most recognized as the primary cause of citrus leprosis, a devastating disease that has historically caused significant economic losses in citrus-producing regions, particularly in South and Central America.

The pathogen is a single-stranded RNA virus. Unlike many other plant viruses that spread through mechanical contact or seeds, the Cilevirus requires a specific biological vector to transmit the infection between host plants, making it a unique subject of study in plant pathology.

Host plants primarily include various species of citrus. Symptoms of infection are characterized by chlorotic or necrotic spots on leaves, stems, and fruits. These lesions often develop a distinct ring pattern, which can lead to localized tissue death and structural weakening of the affected plant parts.

The transmission of Cilevirus is strictly mediated by false spider mites of the family Tenuipalpidae, specifically the Brevipalpus genus. The mites acquire the virus during feeding and remain infectious for their lifespan, facilitating the spread of the disease within and between orchards.

The economic impact of the disease is severe, as it leads to fruit drop, reduced yield, and dieback of branches. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM), specifically targeting the mite vectors with acaricides, alongside strict quarantine measures and the use of certified disease-free nursery stock to prevent further spread.
