The causative agent of the disease is the Citlodavirus citri, a virus responsible for citrus leprosis. This viral infection is recognized as a major phytosanitary threat to citrus production globally, causing significant economic losses in various regions, particularly in the Americas.

The disease primarily impacts various citrus species, with sweet orange being highly susceptible. Lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit varieties also exhibit vulnerability to the virus. Once a tree is infected, the systemic nature of the pathogen makes it difficult to manage without rigorous intervention.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by distinct localized lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. These spots often feature a necrotic center surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these lesions become crusty and scabby, severely affecting the aesthetic quality and commercial value of the fruit.

The transmission of the virus occurs exclusively through Brevipalpus mites. These microscopic vectors acquire the virus from infected tissues and transmit it to healthy plants during feeding. Environmental factors that favor mite population growth directly correlate with an increased incidence of the disease in orchards.

Management strategies focus heavily on controlling the mite population. Chemical control using effective acaricides is the primary method to prevent disease spread. Additionally, cultural practices such as pruning infected branches, removing severely damaged trees, and ensuring the use of certified pathogen-free nursery stock are essential for long-term control.
