Description

Citrivirus is a genus of plant viruses belonging to the family Betaflexiviridae. This group of pathogens poses a significant threat to citrus cultivation globally. As a systemic disease, once it infects a plant, the virus spreads through the vascular system, impacting the overall physiology and health of the host tree.

Common hosts for this virus include various citrus species such as lemon, orange, lime, and grapefruit. The infection interferes with essential biological processes, including nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which leads to long-term decline in vigor and reduced fruit quality for the affected citrus trees.

Clinical symptoms of Citrivirus infection often manifest as leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), and occasionally stunted growth or foliage distortion. The severity of these symptoms can vary widely depending on the specific strain of the virus and the susceptibility of the host cultivar, often complicating early detection.

Transmission in the field primarily occurs via two pathways: through grafting with infected budwood or scions, and through insect vectors, such as aphids, which transfer the virus while feeding on healthy tissue. The movement of contaminated nursery stock is a major factor in the spread of the virus to new areas.

Because there is no cure for viral infections in plants, management strategies must focus entirely on preventative measures to stop the spread of the pathogen within the orchard:

  • Utilizing only certified virus-free rootstocks and scion wood for propagation.
  • Implementing rigorous sanitation protocols for pruning and grafting tools.
  • Managing populations of sap-sucking insects that serve as potential vectors.
  • Prompt identification and removal of infected trees to maintain orchard hygiene.
