Citrus dwarfing viroid

Citrus dwarfing viroid (CDVd) is an infectious, non-encapsidated single-stranded circular RNA pathogen that causes significant physiological disorders in citrus plants. As a viroid, it relies entirely on the host plant's transcriptional machinery to replicate, causing systemic disruption that affects the plant's normal growth and developmental pathways.

This pathogen impacts various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, grapefruits, and mandarins. It is particularly concerning for commercial citrus production where specific rootstocks, such as Poncirus trifoliata and its hybrids, are utilized. The interaction between the viroid and sensitive rootstocks often leads to severe growth stunting, which limits the economic potential of the trees.

Symptoms of the infection are characterized primarily by severe stunting, where affected trees are significantly smaller than their healthy counterparts. Foliar symptoms often include reduced leaf size, chlorosis, and the development of shortened internodes, which results in a stunted, congested growth habit. The entire canopy may appear sparse or show signs of premature aging and decline.

The transmission of CDVd occurs mainly through human-mediated activities, particularly through the use of infected grafting material. Additionally, the viroid is easily transmitted during routine orchard maintenance such as pruning. Contaminated blades, saws, and pruning shears serve as primary vectors, moving the pathogen from infected trees to healthy ones if not properly sterilized between uses.

Management of the disease is strictly preventative because there are no curative treatments available for infected trees. Effective control strategies involve the use of certified disease-free propagation material, implementing strict sanitation protocols for all pruning equipment, and regular monitoring to identify and remove symptomatic trees. Proper orchard hygiene is the most critical factor in mitigating the impact of this viroid.
