Description
Closteroviridae is a family of plant viruses characterized by long, flexuous, filamentous virions that infect a wide range of host plants. These pathogens are primarily phloem-limited, meaning they colonize the plant's vascular system, which disrupts the transport of nutrients and causes severe physiological decline in the infected host.
This family includes several economically significant plant viruses, such as the Beet yellows virus and the Grapevine leafroll-associated virus. They target a broad diversity of crops, including grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and sugar beets. The systemic nature of these infections makes them particularly difficult to manage in large-scale farming.
Symptoms associated with Closteroviridae infection are typically characterized by leaf yellowing (chlorosis), interveinal reddening, leaf curling, and stunted growth. Infected plants often exhibit reduced vigor, poor fruit set, and decreased tolerance to environmental stresses like drought or heat, leading to substantial yield losses.
Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, mainly aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies, in a semi-persistent manner. The insects acquire the virus by feeding on the phloem of an infected plant and can transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The virus does not replicate within the insect, but it remains infectious for a period ranging from several hours to a few days.
Management strategies focus on preventing the introduction and spread of the virus:
- Planting certified, virus-free nursery stock.
- Implementing strict vector control programs using systemic insecticides.
- Removing and destroying infected plants to prevent further spread.
- Managing alternative weed hosts in and around the field.
- Using physical barriers, such as insect-proof netting, in greenhouse environments.
