Description
Closteroviruses belong to the genus Closterovirus within the family Closteroviridae. These plant viruses are characterized by their long, flexuous, filamentous particles and a single-stranded RNA genome. They are phloem-limited, meaning they colonize the sieve tubes of plants, which severely disrupts the translocation of photoassimilates and systemic development of the host.
These pathogens have a broad host range, infecting various economically significant crops. Key members of this genus are responsible for serious diseases in sugar beets, grapes, citrus, cucurbits, and tomato plants. The economic impact is globally recognized, as they are capable of devastating entire fields under favorable environmental conditions.
The visual symptoms of a Closterovirus infection often include systemic chlorosis, vein yellowing, leaf curling, and overall plant stunting. As the virus restricts nutrient flow, infected plants may exhibit brittle leaves, reddish discoloration in some varieties, and a noticeable reduction in fruit size and quality, ultimately leading to significant yield loss.
Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, specifically aphids, whiteflies, and mealybugs. The transmission mode is semi-persistent, meaning the insect acquires the virus after a brief feeding period on an infected plant and transmits it to a healthy plant within a short timeframe. They do not circulate within the insect's body, but the vector remains a highly efficient transmission agent.
Managing Closteroviruses is challenging since there are no curative chemical treatments for infected plants. Therefore, control measures prioritize prevention and reduction of viral pressure. The following strategies are essential for a sound integrated pest management program:
- Using clean, virus-indexed seeds and planting stock.
- Effective control of aphid and whitefly populations using appropriate insecticides.
- Removing weeds and volunteer plants that serve as viral reservoirs.
