Description

The causative agent of the disease is the Closterovirus flavitritici virus, which belongs to the Closteroviridae family. This pathogen is classified as a viral infection that affects the vascular system of plants. The disease is systemic, spreading rapidly through host tissues, disrupting photosynthesis processes and overall plant development.

The main crops susceptible to this virus are cereal grains, including soft and hard wheat, barley, and rye. Some wild grass species are also at risk and can act as reservoirs for the infection during the off-season period.

Symptoms of the infection appear as characteristic yellowing of the leaf blade, often starting at the tips or edges of the leaves. As the disease progresses, chlorosis covers the entire plant, leading to stunted growth, poor tillering, and the formation of underdeveloped or sterile ears, which results in a sharp decline in crop quality.
