Raspberry macular rubi is a viral disease caused by a member of the Closterovirus genus. This plant pathogen primarily colonizes the phloem tissue, where it replicates and disrupts the systemic translocation of nutrients, water, and hormones throughout the vascular system of the host plant.

The primary host for this virus is the raspberry plant (Rubus idaeus). The infection is systemic, meaning that once a plant is infected, the virus spreads to all parts, including canes, leaves, and roots, ensuring that the pathogen persists throughout the entire lifespan of the host plant.

Symptoms are most visible on the foliage during the growing season. The characteristic signs include the development of chlorotic spots that transition into reddish or purple maculae, which gives the disease its specific common name.
