Description

Beet yellows virus, caused by pathogens of the genus Closterovirus, is one of the most economically significant viral diseases affecting sugar beet crops worldwide. The virus specifically targets the plant's phloem, causing significant disruption to the translocation of sugars and other metabolites.

The primary hosts for this virus are plants within the Amaranthaceae family, including sugar, fodder, and table beets. The virus can also survive in various wild hosts, such as common weeds, which serve as crucial reservoirs for the pathogen throughout the growing season.

Characteristic symptoms include chlorosis and yellowing of the older leaves, which gradually spreads throughout the entire plant. Infected leaves often become brittle, thickened, and leather-like, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant and hinders the development of the taproot.

Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, primarily aphids such as Myzus persicae. The virus is acquired by the vector during feeding and can be transmitted to healthy plants within a short period, although it does not persist in the vector for long durations unless re-acquired.
