The causative agent of this disease is the Closterovirus necrodianthi, a viral pathogen that belongs to the Closterovirus genus. This virus targets the plant's vascular system, causing systemic infection that disrupts essential nutrient transport and leads to progressive tissue degeneration.

The virus primarily affects carnations (Dianthus species) in both greenhouse and field conditions. Due to the highly infectious nature of the virus, it can cause severe damage to commercial flower production, leading to total yield loss if not managed aggressively in the early stages.
