The causative agent of this disease is the virus Closterovirus rosafolium. It belongs to the Closteroviridae family, which is known for its filamentous particles that specifically target the phloem tissue of plants. By obstructing the transport of nutrients from the leaves to the roots, the virus severely compromises the physiological health and metabolic functions of the host plant.

The primary hosts for this virus are various species and cultivars of roses (Rosa). The virus operates as a systemic pathogen, moving throughout the vascular system of the entire plant. Once a rose bush is infected, it typically remains a lifelong carrier, acting as an active source of inoculum for other nearby plants in the garden or greenhouse environment.

Symptoms of Closterovirus rosafolium infection include pronounced curling or twisting of the leaf blades. Often, this is accompanied by chlorosis, manifesting as yellow spots, veins, or a mosaic pattern on the foliage. Infected plants show signs of stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a significant decrease in the number and quality of flower blooms, leading to a loss of overall aesthetic appeal.
