Description
The causal agent of this disease is Closterovirus tabaci, a virus belonging to the closterovirus group. It acts as a systemic pathogen, colonizing the plant's phloem tissues and disrupting the normal flow of nutrients, which directly impacts the plant's overall health and vigor.
The primary host for this pathogen is tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). However, the virus can also persist in various wild plants within the Solanaceae family, which act as seasonal reservoirs, facilitating the spread of the virus to commercial tobacco fields every season.
Typical symptoms of infection include a distinct yellowing of the leaf veins, which contrasts sharply with the normal green color of the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, affected tobacco plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced foliage quality, leading to poor plant development.
The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, specifically aphids. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
