Unlike viruses, this agent lacks a protein coat and consists solely of a short, circular single-stranded RNA molecule, which replicates autonomously within the host's cellular environment.
The host range of this pathogen is primarily restricted to citrus species, including sweet orange, lemon, and lime varieties. Its ability to persist in a latent state allows it to spread silently throughout orchards, often going undetected until significant physiological stress manifests in the host plants.
Primary symptoms include the development of yellow blotches on leaves, which may be mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or environmental stress. Chronic infections lead to reduced vigor, distorted canopy structure, and significantly diminished fruit yield, negatively impacting the overall commercial viability of the plantation.
