Description

Coconut wilt is a severe and often fatal disease affecting coconut palm plantations globally. Known in various regions by different local names, the disease is primarily characterized by the systemic decline of the palm, leading to massive yield losses and, eventually, the total collapse of the coconut canopy.

The disease is caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized wall-less bacteria that reside within the sieve tubes of the plant's phloem. By inhabiting the vascular tissue, these microorganisms disrupt the translocation of assimilates, ultimately starving the roots and impeding the overall physiological function of the tree.

Key symptoms of the disease include the yellowing and wilting of the fronds, accompanied by a noticeable limpness and curling of the leaves. As the condition progresses, the palm exhibits root necrosis and a failure to develop healthy new inflorescences, which significantly hampers the production of coconuts.

Transmission of the pathogen is primarily facilitated by sap-sucking insect vectors, such as planthoppers or lace bugs. These insects acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on an infected palm and transmit it to healthy ones during subsequent feeding sessions, making the management of vector populations critical to controlling the spread.

Effective prevention and control of Coconut wilt are challenging due to the systemic nature of the pathogen. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach that includes the immediate rogueing and destruction of infected palms to remove the disease reservoir, the application of targeted insecticides to disrupt vector activity, and the implementation of breeding programs aimed at developing resistant or tolerant coconut cultivars.
