Description
Coffee bacterial blight, caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae, is a destructive disease affecting coffee plants worldwide. This pathogen targets leaves, young stems, and berries, potentially causing severe defoliation and significant losses in coffee yield if left unmanaged.
The causative agent, Pseudomonas syringae, is a gram-negative bacterium that enters the plant through natural openings or wounds created by weather events such as hail or strong winds. Once inside the tissue, the bacteria multiply rapidly, destroying cellular structures and secreting toxins that lead to necrosis.
Typical symptoms include small, water-soaked, dark spots on the leaves, which eventually turn black and oily in appearance. These lesions are often surrounded by a yellow halo. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, causing leaves to wither and drop prematurely, which weakens the overall health of the coffee tree.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Cool temperatures combined with high humidity and rainfall are the primary drivers of bacterial spread. The bacteria are easily dispersed via water droplets, allowing the pathogen to move quickly from infected trees to healthy ones throughout the plantation.
Effective management and protection strategies are essential for maintaining plantation productivity:
- Application of copper-based bactericides to protect foliage during wet seasons.
- Sanitary pruning of infected branches to reduce the inoculum load.
- Using windbreaks to minimize mechanical damage to foliage during storms.
- Implementing regular monitoring and scouting programs to detect early signs of infection.
