Coleviroid is a genus of plant-pathogenic viroids that poses a significant threat to various ornamental plants, primarily within the Lamiaceae family. Viroids are the smallest known infectious pathogens, consisting only of a short strand of circular, single-stranded RNA. Unlike viruses, they lack a protein coat, making them rely entirely on the host plant's replication machinery to multiply and cause disease.

The primary host range for this pathogen includes species within the Coleus genus. Given their popularity in landscaping and container gardening, the commercial production of these plants in nurseries is highly susceptible to outbreaks. The nature of vegetative propagation, such as taking cuttings, provides a perfect vector for the systematic spread of the viroid throughout the entire production cycle.

Symptoms of Coleviroid infection often manifest as foliar discoloration, including chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth. In many varieties, the characteristic vibrant colors are replaced by pale, mottled patterns, which severely degrades the plant's marketability. Because symptoms can sometimes be masked by environmental stress, infected plants may remain in the production chain undetected for significant periods.

Transmission occurs mechanically, typically through contaminated tools, equipment, and handling during pruning or propagation. The viroid is highly persistent and can remain on greenhouse surfaces, pots, and gardening implements for weeks. In favorable growing conditions, the pathogen spreads rapidly, especially in high-density greenhouse environments where humidity and frequent contact between plants are common.

Managing Coleviroid is exclusively centered on sanitation and prevention, as there are no chemical pesticides or curative treatments available for viroid infections:

  • Strict culling and destruction of all symptomatic plants to eliminate the inoculum source.
  • Systematic disinfection of all cutting tools and work surfaces using approved chemical agents or heat.
  • Implementation of robust biosecurity measures in nurseries to prevent the introduction of infected material.
  • Sourcing plant material from reputable suppliers who practice meristem-tip culture and viroid-testing.
  • Providing training for greenhouse staff on recognizing early symptoms and maintaining strict hygiene protocols.
