Description

Coleviroid alphacolei is a specific plant pathogen classified as a viroid, which causes systemic infection in various Coleus cultivars. Unlike viruses, this agent consists solely of a small, circular, non-coding RNA molecule that interferes with the plant’s normal genetic and metabolic functions once it infiltrates the host cells.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Coleus plant (Solenostemon scutellarioides). Because it is a systemic infection, the viroid colonizes the entire vascular network of the plant. This makes the plant a lifelong carrier, meaning even if symptoms are not immediately visible, the plant remains a reservoir for the pathogen.

Symptoms of the infection are diverse and often impact the aesthetic quality of the foliage. Growers frequently observe severe leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing, dwarfing, and significant curling or leaf distortion. Because the viroid disrupts hormonal signaling within the plant, infected specimens often show stunted growth compared to healthy individuals.

Transmission of the viroid occurs primarily through mechanical vectors. Common agricultural practices, such as pruning, pinching back, or taking cuttings with contaminated tools, are the most frequent routes of infection. Insects may occasionally contribute to spread, but the contamination of shears and knives remains the most significant risk factor in professional nurseries.

There are no chemical treatments available to cure a plant infected with a viroid. Effective management relies on strict sanitation and prevention. This includes the implementation of rigorous disinfection protocols for all tools using bleach or alcohol, the destruction of symptomatic plants to prevent spread, and the use of certified pathogen-free propagating material to maintain crop health.
