Coleviroid epsiloncolei is a specialized plant pathogen classified as a viroid, which affects ornamental plants, specifically within the genus Coleus. Unlike traditional viruses, this pathogen consists solely of a small, circular, non-coding RNA molecule that interferes with the host plant's gene regulation, leading to systemic developmental defects and reduced ornamental value.
The primary hosts for this viroid are various cultivars of Coleus, often grown in greenhouses and nurseries. Given the nature of its transmission, it presents a significant challenge for plant propagators. Because many infections in the early stages are asymptomatic, the pathogen can silently move through an entire facility via contaminated cutting tools or infected parent plants.
Symptoms of infection are usually characterized by systemic physiological changes. Growers may observe interveinal chlorosis, which creates a mottled leaf pattern, as well as significant leaf curling, twisting, or crinkling. In many cases, infected plants show stunted growth, making them unsuitable for retail, which results in major economic losses for producers.

The viroid is highly contagious via mechanical contact, such as pruning or taking cuttings with contaminated tools. High humidity and high-density planting conditions facilitate the rapid spread of the pathogen between closely placed plants, especially when leaves come into direct contact.
There are currently no curative treatments or chemical agents capable of eliminating this viroid from infected plant tissues. Therefore, management must focus on strict exclusion and sanitation. Key strategies include procuring certified viroid-free starting material, regular disinfection of tools using potent disinfectants like household bleach, and the immediate rogueing and destruction of symptomatic plants to prevent further outbreaks.
