Description

Coleus gamma viroid (Coleviroid gammacolei) is a subviral pathogen that primarily infects decorative plants within the Solenostemon genus. Being a small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule without a protein coat, this pathogen is highly efficient at hijacking the host's cellular processes for its own replication, leading to systemic infection.

The host range is primarily limited to Coleus species, which are widely cultivated for their colorful foliage. The pathogen poses a significant threat to commercial ornamental nurseries, where the practice of mass vegetative propagation allows the viroid to spread rapidly from infected parent plants to new cuttings.

Typical symptoms of infection include severe stunting, leaf deformation, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants often exhibit shortened internodes and a marked loss of color vibrancy. Because the viroid affects the plant's physiological development, the overall aesthetic value of the plant is severely diminished, often rendering it unsalable.

The transmission of this viroid occurs primarily through mechanical means. During propagation, trimming, or pinching back, contaminated tools facilitate the spread of the pathogen to healthy tissues. Additionally, direct physical contact between plants in high-density greenhouse environments can contribute to the dissemination of the viroid.

Since there are no chemical treatments available to eradicate Coleviroid gammacolei, prevention is the only viable management strategy. Growers should implement strict sanitation protocols, such as routinely disinfecting tools with alcohol or bleach, sourcing certified virus-free cuttings, and immediately roguing out any symptomatic plants to prevent the further spread of the pathogen across the facility.
