Comovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Secoviridae family. These pathogens are known for causing significant economic losses by infecting a wide range of dicotyledonous plants, particularly those belonging to the legume family. The virus particles are non-enveloped and possess an icosahedral symmetry, carrying a bipartite single-stranded RNA genome.
The primary hosts of the Comovirus genus include various legumes such as cowpea, soybean, bean, and clover. The most widely studied member, Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), serves as a classic model for understanding viral replication and infection mechanisms. These viruses disrupt the plant's physiological functions, severely impacting growth rates and reproductive efficiency.
Symptoms of Comovirus infection are typically characterized by distinct mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and mottling of the leaves. Infected plants often show stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced foliage development. In severe cases, the viral activity leads to poor fruit set and reduced quality of pods, ultimately leading to significant yield losses in commercial agricultural settings.
