Description
Soybean mosaic virus is a significant viral pathogen that affects soybean crops globally. It belongs to the family of viruses that cause systemic infection, drastically reducing the metabolic efficiency of the host plant and impacting the overall development and productivity of the field.
The primary host for this virus is soybean (Glycine max). However, the pathogen has a wide range of alternate hosts within the legume family, which allows the virus to survive between growing seasons in weeds or volunteer plants, providing a continuous source of inoculum.
Symptoms of the infection typically include a light and dark green mosaic pattern on the leaves. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and reduced pod set. The severity of these symptoms often depends on the timing of the infection and the genetic susceptibility of the specific soybean variety.
The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably various species of aphids, which transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner.
