Comovirus musivi, commonly identified as the Squash mosaic virus (SqMV), is a significant viral pathogen affecting various crops within the Cucurbitaceae family. This virus is widespread globally, representing a persistent challenge for both commercial greenhouse operations and open-field vegetable production due to its rapid transmission and impact on yields.

The host range is primarily limited to cucurbits, including melons, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. In susceptible varieties, the infection can become systemic shortly after inoculation, leading to long-term stress on the plant and drastically reducing its ability to produce high-quality, marketable fruit.

Symptoms are highly characteristic, presenting as distinctive mosaic patterns with light and dark green mottling on leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and reduced internode length. The fruits produced by infected plants often suffer from surface irregularities, mottling, and discoloration, which severely devalues the crop.

The transmission of the virus occurs through multiple pathways: infected seeds, mechanical transmission via contaminated tools or manual handling, and biological vectors such as cucumber beetles (Acalymma and Diabrotica species). The presence of these insect vectors is a major risk factor, as they can transmit the virus during feeding, facilitating swift spread throughout a cultivation area.

Effective management focuses on integrated prevention and cultural practices since there are no curative treatments for viral diseases in plants:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free seed lots to prevent early-stage outbreaks.
  • Managing insect vector populations early in the season to prevent virus transmission.
  • Rogueing and destroying symptomatic plants to eliminate local infection reservoirs.
  • Sanitation of farming tools and equipment to prevent mechanical spread between crop rows.
