The causative agent of this disease is a virus from the Comovirus genus, which belongs to the Secoviridae family. As a viral pathogen, it systemically infects the host plant, hijacking cellular machinery for its own replication, which severely disrupts the normal physiological development of the crop.

This pathogen primarily targets legume crops, including various species of beans, soybeans, and cowpeas. The systemic nature of the infection means that once a plant is colonized, the virus can spread to all tissues, significantly impacting the structural integrity and health of the plant.

Primary symptoms of the infection include distinct mosaic patterns on the foliage, ranging from light green to yellow mottling, leaf crinkling, and mosaic-induced distortion of leaf blades. Heavily affected plants typically display stunted growth and a significant reduction in flower production.

Transmission occurs through mechanical inoculation (handling of plants), contaminated gardening tools, and vectors such as beetles that feed on infected sap. Environmental conditions, specifically warm temperatures and moist climates, facilitate the activity of these insect vectors and the rate of viral transmission throughout the field.

Controlling this virus is challenging since there are no direct chemical cures for plant viral infections. Therefore, management relies on prevention strategies such as using certified disease-free seeds, implementing rigorous sanitation of tools, controlling insect vector populations, and utilizing resistant cultivars in high-risk areas.
