Cossaviricota is a major phylum of viruses that includes various pathogens responsible for severe viral diseases in plants. In the field of agronomy, these viruses are recognized for their ability to invade host cells and alter the genetic expression of plants, which often results in significant economic losses in global agriculture.

These viruses function as obligate intracellular parasites. Upon entering the plant tissues, typically through wounds or insect feeding, the viral particles utilize the host's cellular machinery to replicate their genome. This process diverts essential nutrients away from the plant's normal growth processes, leading to metabolic imbalance and developmental disorders.

Cossaviricota viruses possess a wide host range, infecting both dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous crops, including staple grains, vegetables, and ornamental plants. The systemic nature of these infections means that once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the vascular system, affecting all new growth and fruit development.

Typical symptoms and signs of viral infection include the following:
