Description
Cotton leaf curl disease is a devastating viral condition affecting cotton plantations globally. It is caused by the Cotton leaf curl virus (CLCuV), a complex of begomoviruses transmitted by the whitefly. This disease significantly restricts plant growth and development, leading to substantial yield losses in affected areas.
The primary host for this viral pathogen is the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum and other species). However, the virus also survives in alternative hosts, particularly various weed species within the Malvaceae family, which act as reservoirs for the virus during the off-season periods.
Symptoms are distinct and easily identifiable: leaves exhibit upward curling, extreme reduction in size, and the development of vein thickening or enations on the abaxial leaf surface. Severely infected plants are stunted, show shortened internodes, and fail to produce normal flowers or bolls, rendering them unproductive.
The disease spread is directly correlated with the population dynamics of its vector, Bemisia tabaci (tobacco whitefly). Environmental conditions such as warm, humid weather favor the reproduction of these vectors, facilitating the rapid transmission of the virus across large fields during the active growing season.
Management strategies focus on a multi-faceted approach. This includes planting resistant cultivars, implementing strict weed management to remove host reservoirs, and chemical control of whitefly populations. Early detection and the destruction of infected plants are critical steps to prevent the spread of the virus within the field.
