The Cressdnaviricota phylum comprises a diverse group of viruses characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. In agricultural settings, these pathogens are recognized as significant agents causing systemic diseases in various crops. These viruses hijack the host plant's replication machinery, disrupting normal metabolic processes and cellular functions, leading to reduced vitality and crop productivity.

These viruses affect a wide range of economically important hosts, including tomatoes, beans, sugar beets, and various cereal crops. Many wild weed species serve as alternate hosts, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment between growing seasons. This reservoir capacity makes these viruses particularly difficult to eradicate once they are established in a specific area.

Symptoms of infection are diverse and often include leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), stunting, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants often show significant internode shortening, leading to a stunted growth habit. Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars and ensuring the removal of weed hosts are essential practices for maintaining crop health and minimizing yield losses.
