Description
Crinivirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses belonging to the Closteroviridae family. These pathogens are characterized by their thread-like, filamentous morphology and a bipartite, single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome. They are primarily confined to the phloem tissue of host plants, which significantly disrupts plant metabolism.
These viruses affect a wide range of economically important crops, including tomatoes, peppers, melons, and lettuce. The most significant economic impact is typically observed in greenhouse vegetable production, where favorable microclimates facilitate the rapid buildup of both the virus and its insect vectors.
Common clinical signs of infection include interveinal chlorosis, which usually starts on the lower leaves and progresses upward. Infected leaves may become brittle, thickened, or show symptoms of upward curling. These physiological changes lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and poor fruit development, often resulting in significant yield losses.
Transmission occurs exclusively through whitefly vectors, most notably Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum. The virus is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner, meaning the insect remains infectious for a few days after feeding on an infected host. Management is complicated by the fact that the virus cannot be transmitted mechanically through sap or seeds, making insect control the primary focus.
Effective management and prevention of Crinivirus outbreaks require a rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Strict weed control around greenhouses to eliminate potential virus reservoirs.
- Implementation of insect-proof screening for greenhouse vents and openings.
- Regular application of chemical or biological insecticides to suppress whitefly populations.
- Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal of infected plants at the first sign of symptoms to minimize virus spread.
