Description
Crinivirus chelidonii is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Crinivirus within the Closteroviridae family. It is known to induce systemic symptoms in its host plants, primarily interfering with the plant's vascular integrity. The virus possesses long, flexuous filamentous particles characteristic of this taxonomic group.
The primary host for this virus is the greater celandine (Chelidonium majus). While often limited to wild populations, its presence in agricultural landscapes can pose a risk to nearby susceptible crops, acting as a reservoir from which the virus can migrate under favorable ecological conditions.
Clinical symptoms of the infection include interveinal chlorosis, significant vein yellowing, and frequent leaf distortion. As the disease progresses, the infected foliage exhibits a patchy, mosaic-like appearance due to impaired photosynthesis, leading to stunted overall plant growth and reduced vigor in affected individuals.
The development and transmission of Crinivirus chelidonii are highly dependent on insect vectors, specifically whiteflies (Aleyrodidae). The virus is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner, meaning that the insect vector acquires the virus after feeding on an infected plant and remains infectious for a period before needing to re-acquire the pathogen.
Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle by targeting the vector population and eliminating host reservoirs. Essential practices include the implementation of rigorous phytosanitary measures, such as removing infected weeds, applying appropriate insecticides to control whitefly populations, and using physical barriers or reflective mulches to deter vectors from colonizing the crop area.
