Cucurbit crinivirus (Crinivirus cucurbitae) is a significant viral pathogen that affects plants belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. This virus is characterized by its systemic colonization of the plant's phloem, which disrupts the translocation of nutrients and severely impacts the plant's overall physiological function, eventually leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit yield.

The host range of this virus includes economically important crops such as cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, melons, and watermelons. It is particularly problematic in intensive cultivation systems, where high densities of host plants create ideal conditions for rapid spread, especially in environments where the populations of vectors are not effectively managed.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as interveinal chlorosis, which progresses into a distinct yellowing of the leaves while the leaf veins remain green. As the disease advances, the leaves become brittle, cupped, or curled, and the overall plant vigor decreases significantly. Consequently, the affected plants produce fewer and smaller fruits, often resulting in severe economic losses for growers.

The virus is primarily transmitted by whiteflies (such as Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum) in a semi-persistent manner. The vector acquires the virus by feeding on infected plant phloem and can transmit it to healthy hosts within minutes of landing. Because the virus does not replicate within the vector, transmission efficiency depends on the vector's feeding behavior and population density.

Effective management and prevention of Cucurbit crinivirus require an integrated pest management approach focusing on the following actions:

  • implementing stringent weed control programs to remove virus reservoirs;
  • installing fine-mesh insect screens to exclude whitefly vectors from greenhouses;
  • applying systematic insecticide rotations to control vector populations;
  • utilizing reflective mulches to deter insect landing;
  • practicing careful sanitation of tools and equipment between rows;
  • removing and destroying severely infected plants early in the season.
