Description
Crinivirus flavibetae is a plant pathogen primarily responsible for yellowing diseases in sugar and table beets. It belongs to the genus Crinivirus, which causes significant physiological disruption by colonizing the phloem tissues of the host plant, effectively blocking the transport of essential nutrients and photosynthates.
The host range of this virus includes various species within the Amaranthaceae family. While it is economically significant in commercial beet farming, the virus also relies on various weeds, such as species of Chenopodium and Amaranthus, to persist in the environment throughout the year.
Symptoms typically involve the development of chlorosis on older leaves, which often progresses toward the younger leaves of the plant. The leaf blades may become thickened and brittle, often rolling inwards. Unlike fungal pathogens, this viral infection does not produce mycelium or spores, but causes systemic yellowing that significantly stunts growth.
The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, most notably the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). Transmission is semi-persistent, meaning the insect can carry the virus for several days after feeding on an infected plant. High temperatures and sheltered microclimates favor the proliferation of these vectors, thus increasing disease incidence.
Economic damage is characterized by a drastic reduction in root weight and sucrose content, often leading to total crop failure in susceptible fields. Management strategies focus on integrated pest management:

- Use of systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations.
