Cucumber toadskin is a condition characterized by the development of large, irregular bumps on the fruit surface, giving it a texture resembling a toad's skin. This abnormality is frequently associated with the Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) or severe physiological stress that disrupts the normal cellular development of the growing cucumber fruit.
This disorder primarily affects plants in the Cucurbitaceae family, with greenhouse-grown cucumbers being the most susceptible. The likelihood of symptom expression peaks during the heavy fruiting phase, as the plant's metabolic resources are strained, making it more vulnerable to external stressors and pathogen colonization.
The primary symptom is the distortion of the fruit skin, which becomes rough, rigid, and deeply pitted. Such fruits are commercially unmarketable due to their altered texture and often degraded nutritional or taste quality. In cases linked to viral infection, leaves often show characteristic mosaic patterns, curling, and stunted growth.
Environmental conditions and vectors play a crucial role in the disease's development. Rapid temperature fluctuations and imbalances in water supply or nutrient uptake (particularly boron and calcium) can trigger physiological toadskin. If the cause is viral, the disease spreads rapidly via sap-sucking insects like aphids, which transmit the virus from weed reservoirs to the crop.
Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to control insect vectors, along with maintaining optimal environmental conditions in greenhouses. Preventive measures include using resistant cultivars, implementing strict sanitation to remove infected plant material, and ensuring balanced fertilization to support vigorous plant growth and resistance against stress factors.
