Description
The Cucumovirus genus represents a group of highly damaging plant viruses that cause widespread systemic diseases. The most prominent member is the Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV), which is recognized as one of the most economically significant plant pathogens due to its vast host range and high genetic diversity, capable of infecting hundreds of different species.
These viruses affect a diverse range of crops, including cucurbits, solanaceous plants like tomatoes and peppers, legumes, and various ornamental plants. The impact of the disease is devastating, as it can lead to severe stunting of plants and total loss of commercial viability for fruits and vegetables, often causing significant financial losses for producers.
Symptoms of Cucumovirus infection vary depending on the host but generally include mosaic patterns (light and dark green mottling), leaf distortion, and curling. In many cases, plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and fruit malformation, including bumpiness and uneven ripening, which renders the produce non-marketable.
Transmission of Cucumoviruses is primarily facilitated by aphids in a non-persistent manner, meaning the virus is acquired and transmitted by the insect within seconds or minutes. Furthermore, mechanical transmission through contaminated tools, handling, and in some cases, seed transmission, plays a significant role in the spread of the virus within greenhouse and field environments.
Management strategies focus on a multi-tiered approach: controlling aphid vector populations through consistent insecticide applications, strict weed management to remove virus reservoirs, and the deployment of resistant cultivars. Additionally, sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting tools between plants and rogueing infected specimens, are essential to minimize the spread of the virus.
