Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a major plant pathogen within the Cucumovirus genus, recognized for its global distribution and broad host range. It is considered one of the most economically significant viruses in agriculture, affecting both vegetable and ornamental plants.
The virus infects a diverse array of species, including cucurbits, solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers, as well as legumes. It commonly survives in perennial weeds, which act as critical reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist during the off-season and reappear each spring.
Symptoms of CMV are highly variable depending on the host and growth stage, but common signs include a distinct mosaic or mottling pattern on leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and systemic necrosis, leading to a significant reduction in fruit set and overall yield quality.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, meaning the virus is acquired and transmitted within seconds of probing. Mechanical transmission is also a major factor, as the virus can spread easily through contaminated pruning tools, clothing, or direct plant-to-plant contact.
Management of CMV relies heavily on preventive agricultural practices rather than chemical treatments, as there is no cure for viral infection in plants. Key strategies include the implementation of rigorous weed control, the use of virus-free certified seeds, the application of insecticides to manage aphid populations, and strict sanitation protocols for all agricultural equipment to prevent the mechanical spread of the virus.
