The causative agent of the disease is a virus belonging to the genus Curtovirus. This pathogen is transmitted to plants exclusively by specific insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers. The virus enters the plant's vascular system, systematically affecting the development of the entire plant by disrupting the translocation of nutrients and water.

While the primary host is horseradish, the virus can also affect various other members of the Brassicaceae family. Weed species often act as alternative hosts, maintaining the viral reservoir in the field environment throughout the season. These weeds are critical in the disease cycle, ensuring that the virus remains present even when the main crop is not actively growing.

Once a leafhopper feeds on an infected plant, it remains a carrier for the rest of its lifespan, continuously spreading the virus as it moves to healthy plants.

The economic impact of this disease is severe, as it leads to low yields and unmarketable roots. Management strategies focus on controlling vector populations through targeted insecticide applications and removing infected plants from the field. Preventive measures also include maintaining weed-free fields and strictly selecting virus-free, healthy propagation material for planting.
