Description

Beet curly top is a severe viral disease caused by Curtovirus betae. It is a phloem-limited virus that causes systemic changes in plant development, significantly affecting the yield and quality of sugar beet, as well as many other vegetable crops including tomatoes and peppers.

The host range of the virus is quite broad, encompassing numerous weed species which act as a reservoir for the pathogen. During the winter and early spring, the virus persists in these weeds, allowing the vector to acquire the virus before moving into cultivated fields as temperatures rise.

Symptoms are distinct and usually include inward curling of the leaf margins, yellowing of the leaves, and stunted growth. The plant often appears rigid and dwarfed, while the taproot develops brown, necrotic rings in the vascular bundles, making it unsuitable for sugar production.

Transmission occurs exclusively via the beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus). The virus is acquired by the leafhopper during feeding on an infected plant and is transmitted to healthy plants through saliva. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on the movement patterns of the leafhopper population in response to climatic conditions.

Management strategies focus primarily on vector control and host resistance. Since there are no curative treatments for viral diseases once the plant is infected, prevention is paramount. This includes using insecticides, planting at times when leafhopper populations are lower, and managing weed populations in and around fields to remove the source of infection.
