Description
Spinach curly top is a severe plant disease caused by viruses within the Curtovirus genus, family Geminiviridae. The virus infects the phloem tissues, causing a systemic disruption of the plant's nutrient transport system and significantly altering its development.
The host range is primarily focused on the Amaranthaceae family, including spinach and sugar beets. Additionally, various wild weeds act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even when susceptible commercial crops are not present.
Clinical signs of infection include stunted growth, upward curling and yellowing of the younger leaves, and thickening of leaf veins. Affected plants often exhibit a stiff, brittle texture and an underdeveloped root system, rendering the crop entirely unmarketable.
Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, primarily the beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus). Once a leafhopper acquires the virus through feeding on an infected plant, it remains viruliferous for the duration of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen as it migrates to new fields.
