Cytorhabdoviruses (genus Cytorhabdovirus) are a group of single-stranded RNA viruses within the Rhabdoviridae family that infect a wide range of plant species. Unlike other related viruses, these pathogens replicate exclusively within the cytoplasm of host cells, leading to systemic infections that can significantly affect plant health and agricultural productivity.

These viruses affect various economically important crops, including small grains, potatoes, tomatoes, and leafy vegetables like lettuce. The virus typically colonizes the phloem tissues of the plant, disrupting nutrient transport and interfering with basic physiological processes. As a result, the plant’s ability to allocate resources for grain, fruit, or foliage development is severely compromised.

The symptoms of infection are quite distinctive but can vary depending on the host plant. Common indicators include mosaic patterns, chlorosis, leaf curling, and severe stunting. In grain crops, infections often result in a yellow dwarf appearance, reduced tillering, and shriveled seeds. In some cases, the tissue may develop necrotic spots or streaks, which are clear signs of vascular dysfunction.

Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, including aphids, leafhoppers, and thrips. The virus is acquired by the insect while feeding on infected plant sap and is subsequently transmitted to healthy plants during future feeding events. Environmental conditions that promote the population growth and migration of these vectors are the primary drivers for the rapid spread of the disease across agricultural fields.

Management strategies focus on vector control and preventative measures, as there is no chemical cure for systemic plant viral infections. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for successful mitigation:

  • Apply systemic insecticides to suppress populations of known insect vectors.
  • Remove volunteer plants and weeds that act as reservoir hosts for the virus.
  • Select certified virus-free planting material and resistant crop varieties.
  • Maintain adequate spatial isolation between new plantings and older, potentially infected crops.
