Description

Brassica cytorhabdovirus (Cytorhabdovirus brassicae) is a significant viral pathogen that affects crops within the Brassicaceae family. As a member of the Rhabdoviridae family, this virus consists of bacilliform particles that replicate within the cytoplasm of host cells, leading to systemic physiological stress and the disruption of normal developmental pathways in host plants.

The primary hosts for this virus are various cabbage cultivars, including white cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. The virus also relies on numerous wild cruciferous weed species to serve as reservoirs throughout the off-season. These weeds allow the pathogen to persist in an area even when cultivated host plants are absent, creating a constant risk for new plantings.

Symptoms of the infection typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and curling or curling of the leaf margins. Infected plants often show severe stunting, stunted internodes, and a significant delay in head development. The reduced photosynthetic efficiency caused by the viral interference leads to lower yield and poor product quality.

The virus is primarily transmitted by insect vectors, most notably aphid species. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant, it ingests the viral particles and can subsequently transmit the virus to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. This method of transmission allows the virus to spread rapidly across fields, especially during periods of high aphid activity.

Managing the Brassica cytorhabdovirus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach, as there is no chemical cure for infected plants. Effective control strategies include:

  • rigorous control of aphid populations using targeted insecticide applications;
  • management of cruciferous weeds in and around fields to remove virus reservoirs;
  • use of high-quality, virus-free seeds;
  • implementing proper spatial isolation between plantings to reduce viral spread;
  • prompt roguing and destruction of infected plants to minimize inoculum sources.
