Description
Fusarium wilt of date palm, locally known as Bayoud disease, is a lethal fungal infection affecting the date palm Phoenix dactylifera. The causative agent of this destructive disease is the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis, which specifically targets the plant's vascular system.
The fungus invades the roots and migrates into the xylem, where it proliferates and produces toxins that impede water transport. While it primarily affects date palms, secondary hosts, such as henna plants, can carry the fungus without showing severe symptoms, acting as reservoirs for the pathogen within the agroecosystem.
The characteristic symptoms begin with the yellowing and wilting of the fronds, usually starting from the bottom of the crown. A distinct white stripe often appears on the rachis or leaflets, which explains the Arabic name 'Bayoud' (meaning white). Over time, the entire tree displays a scorched appearance, and internal inspection of the trunk reveals dark-brown discoloration in the vascular bundles.
The disease thrives in warm soil conditions and spreads rapidly through contaminated irrigation water, infected gardening tools, and the movement of soil or plant materials. The pathogen produces resistant structures called chlamydospores, which allow it to persist in the soil for over a decade, making soil eradication extremely difficult once the area is contaminated.
Management focuses on strict phytosanitary measures and genetic selection. Since chemical control of soil-borne vascular pathogens in large palm groves is largely ineffective, the primary strategy involves cultivating resistant cultivars and maintaining rigorous quarantine protocols to prevent the introduction of infected suckers or soil into new areas. Proper sanitation of tools is mandatory to stop mechanical transmission between trees.
