Description

The Deltaflexiviridae family consists of a group of plant-pathogenic viruses characterized by a single-stranded (+)RNA genome and filamentous virions. These pathogens are obligate intracellular parasites that hijack the host cell machinery for replication, leading to systemic infection throughout the plant tissues.

These viruses affect a wide range of agricultural, ornamental, and fruit crops. They are frequently identified in berry crops, such as strawberries, as well as various bulbous plants and vegetable crops, often causing either latent infections or severe outbreaks that impact plant physiology significantly.

Symptoms of infection vary depending on the host species and environmental conditions. Common manifestations include mosaic leaf patterns, leaf deformation, chlorotic spotting or striping, and general stunted growth. In many instances, the virus may remain latent for extended periods without producing obvious visual signs.

The primary modes of Deltaflexiviridae transmission include vegetative propagation using infected planting material and the activity of insect vectors, such as aphids, thrips, or nematodes. Conditions that promote the density of these vectors often correlate with the rapid spread of the virus within commercial fields.

Effective management of this viral family relies heavily on preventative measures, as there are no chemical treatments available to cure systemic viral infections. The strategy includes using certified virus-free propagation materials, implementing strict vector control programs, roguing infected plants, and maintaining high phytosanitary standards in field management.
