Description

Deltaflexivirus is a genus of plant-pathogenic viruses belonging to the family Alphaflexiviridae. As an RNA-based virus, it acts as a systemic pathogen that invades the vascular tissues of its hosts, causing complex physiological disorders that interfere with the plant's normal growth and developmental processes.

These viruses primarily target woody plant species, with a significant emphasis on fruit-bearing trees. Specifically, stone fruits belonging to the Prunus genus, including cherries, plums, and peaches, are among the most common and economically important hosts prone to infection by various strains of this viral group.

Clinical signs of infection include a variety of foliar symptoms, such as chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and premature senescence. In severe cases, the infected trees exhibit significant stunting, reduced vigour, and a noticeable decline in branch density, which hampers the tree's overall photosynthetic capacity.

Transmission of Deltaflexivirus within agricultural settings typically occurs through the use of infected propagation materials, such as rootstocks and scions. Additionally, the virus can spread mechanically through contaminated pruning equipment or potentially via insect vectors that feed on the phloem sap of the host plants, facilitating the rapid transfer of the virus within a nursery or orchard.

The impact of this disease on agricultural productivity is substantial. Infected trees show decreased fruit set, inferior fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to secondary environmental stressors like drought, cold temperatures, and other pathogenic attacks. Due to the systemic nature of the virus, there is no chemical cure once a plant is infected.
