The pathogen is characterized by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome that disrupts host cellular functions, leading to systemic physiological stress. This virus is predominantly transmitted through mechanical means, making it a critical concern in controlled environment agriculture and nurseries.
The primary hosts for these viruses include species within the Caryophyllaceae family, most notably carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus). However, the host range can sometimes extend to other ornamental plants and certain weed species. These weeds often serve as latent reservoirs, maintaining the viral presence in the soil or local environment even when commercial host crops are absent.
