Description
The causative agent of this disease is the carnation ringspot virus, known scientifically as Dianthovirus dianthi. As a member of the Dianthovirus genus, it causes severe systemic infection in plant tissues, leading to metabolic disruption and impaired development of the affected flowers.
The primary host range includes various species of the Caryophyllaceae family, with Dianthus caryophyllus (carnation) being the most economically significant victim. The virus poses a high risk to both commercial greenhouses and garden nurseries worldwide, potentially causing significant production losses.
Symptoms are primarily characterized by the development of chlorotic rings, spots, and necrotic patterns on foliage. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, reduced internode length, and distorted flower buds, which significantly degrades the market value of the cut flowers.
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical means. The virus is easily spread in dense plantations during routine agricultural activities such as pruning, harvesting, or cleaning, as plant sap containing the virus is transferred via tools, clothing, or direct plant-to-plant contact.
Effective management relies entirely on strict sanitation and preventive measures, as there is no chemical cure for infected plants. Growers must focus on using virus-free propagation stock, maintaining high hygiene standards by disinfecting tools with appropriate agents between individual plants, and rogueing out infected specimens to prevent further spread.
