The causal agent of this disease is the Dichorhavirus coffeae virus, belonging to the genus Dichorhavirus. This viral pathogen affects coffee plants, disrupting their metabolic functions and significantly hindering normal physiological development. The virus utilizes a multipartite RNA genome, which facilitates its successful infection cycle within host plants.
The primary host for this virus is the coffee tree (Coffea arabica). The disease is a significant concern for commercial coffee production, as it can cause widespread infection across plantations if not managed effectively, leading to substantial agricultural and economic losses.
The diagnostic symptoms of the disease are characterized by distinct patterns on the foliage. Growers should look for the following signs:
- Chlorotic spots forming rings or winding line patterns on leaves.
- Yellowing and necrosis of infected leaf tissues.
- Stunted growth and distorted leaf morphology.
- Reduced vigor, poor flowering, and lower fruit yield.
The spread and development of the disease are largely facilitated by vector organisms, such as mites, which transmit the virus between plants.
