Dioscorea latent virus (DLV) is a plant pathogen primarily affecting various species of the genus Dioscorea. As the name suggests, the virus is characterized by its latent infection cycle, where the pathogen persists within the host tissues without causing immediate or severe visible symptoms under standard environmental conditions.
The virus is primarily transmitted through the use of infected tubers as planting material. This creates a cycle where the infection persists across multiple generations. Secondary transmission can occur through insect vectors, such as aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding, and through mechanical contact, such as contaminated pruning or harvesting tools.
