Dioscovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Potyviridae family that primarily affects plants of the genus Dioscorea, commonly known as yam. As a systemic pathogen, it infects the host plant at a cellular level, disrupting normal physiological processes such as nutrient transport and carbon fixation.

The primary hosts of this virus are various species of yams, which are vital staple crops in tropical and subtropical regions. The infection can significantly compromise the plant's ability to store energy in its tubers, leading to substantial yield losses and a reduction in the nutritional value and market quality of the harvest.

Symptoms of Dioscovirus infection are often manifested through foliar abnormalities. Growers typically observe mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf distortion, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the tubers themselves may become stunted, twisted, or necrotic, rendering them unsuitable for both replanting and consumption.

The transmission of the virus is driven by two main factors: vegetative propagation and insect vectors. Because the virus persists in infected tubers, planting contaminated material is the most common way to introduce the pathogen to new fields. Once in the field, aphid species act as the primary vectors, transferring the virus to healthy plants while feeding.

Managing Dioscovirus requires a rigorous phytosanitary strategy as no curative treatments are available. Key preventive measures include:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free seed tubers or using meristem-derived plantlets.
  • Implementing regular field scouting to rogue out and destroy symptomatic plants immediately.
  • Applying systemic insecticides to control aphid populations that spread the virus.
  • Sterilizing all agricultural tools between rows to prevent mechanical transmission of the virus.
  • Maintaining a clean field environment by removing alternative weed hosts that may harbor the virus.
