The causative agent of this disease is the Divavirus betadiuris, a plant virus that primarily affects crops belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. As an obligate parasite, the virus relies entirely on the host plant's metabolism for replication, causing systemic infection that spreads throughout the entire vascular system of the plant.

Sugar beets are the primary agricultural crop affected, although the virus can also infect garden and fodder beets. The virus is known to survive in perennial weed reservoirs during the winter, which makes it a persistent threat to commercial fields planted near waste areas or unmanaged land.
