Duplodnaviria is a large realm of viruses characterized by a double-stranded DNA genome. In agricultural science, this group includes various pathogens that cause systemic viral infections, leading to substantial economic losses in crop production. These viruses rely on the host plant's machinery to replicate, often leading to severe physiological disruptions within the plant tissue.

These viruses affect a wide array of plant species, including major horticultural crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and various leguminous plants. Once an infection occurs, the virus spreads through the vascular system, effectively colonizing the entire plant. This movement interferes with the normal transport of carbohydrates and essential nutrients, leading to decreased yields and poor quality of the produce.

Control strategies are strictly preventative since there are no chemical pesticides capable of curing an established viral infection. The most effective approach involves the use of certified virus-free planting stock, consistent sanitation of farming equipment, and rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) to control vectors. Implementing crop rotation and removing symptomatic plants are also crucial practices for sustaining crop health.
